Weddings - Tobermory Registry Office

The Marriage room is situated within the County Buildings in Tobermory, on Breadalbane Street.  The marriage facility has recently been refurbished and upgraded, using what was the original magistrate's courtroom within the same building.  The new facility can comfortably accommodate up to 45 persons and has a stunning panoramic view over Tobermory Bay, Sound of Mull and the hills of Morvern and Ardnamurchan in the background.

To view the inside of the room then click here for a 360 degree panoramic image.

Registrars are now authorised to organise weddings outwith the Registry Office, for more details click here.

Note from the Registrar, Iain MacKinnon.

Civil Marriage.....£45

THE REQUIREMENTS OF SCOTTISH LAW on couples who wish to be legally married in Scotland are listed below.  As an alternative to an official wedding, you may wish to have a blessing ceremony for which there are no legal constraints.
Please note that for marriages, you will need to make contact with the local registrar - information about this is given on the official web site for the General Register Office for Scotland which is the Government department responsible for the registration of marriages in the UK.

Any two persons may marry in Scotland provided that:

  • Both persons are at least sixteen years of age on the day of marriage.

  • They are not related to one another in a way which would prevent their marrying.

  • They are unmarried (any person who has already been married must produce documentary evidence that the previous marriage has been ended by death, divorce or annulment).

  • They are not of the same sex

  • They are capable of understanding the nature of a marriage ceremony and of consenting to marriage.

  • The marriage would be regarded as valid in any foreign country to which either party belongs.

Documents to be produced with your completed marriage notices include:

  • Both birth certificates

  • If you are a divorcee a proof of Decree Absolute (Nisi in England and Wales)

  • If you are a widow/widower - the death certificate of your former spouse

Conditions in general:

  • By law both parties to a proposed civil or religious marriage are required to submit marriage notice forms to the registrar of the district in which the marriage is to take place informing him of their intention to marry.
  • Forms for giving notice can be obtained from any registrar of births, deaths and marriages in Scotland or from the General Register Office for Scotland website at http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/grosweb/grosweb.nsf/pages/home
  • Notice must be given in the three month period prior to the date of marriage and NOT LATER than 15 days before that date.

IF YOU ARE DOMICILED OUTSIDE THE UNITED KINGDOM

  • Both passports

  • A certificate of no impediment issued, or equivalent, by the competent authority to the effect that you are free to marry

All original documentation must be produced and if any of these documents is in a language other than English, a certified translation in English must also be provided.
